Day 4 - December 28

Wailea Golf Club, Paia, Ho'okipa Beach Park & Kihei, Maui

Another beautiful, sunny day!

Up early this morning, Jordan, Gino, Peter and I headed to Wailea Golf Club (south of Kihei) for a round of golf. The course is beautiful, with gorgeous views on every hole. As most resort courses are, the fairways are wide and the greens large, so it's not terribly difficult. The other 3 guys shot 79, 80 & 81. I think I had a 93 - not bad for me.

After golf Jordan & I picked up Kathy & Hillary, and Gino picked up Sharon & Luka, and we headed to the town of Paia (east of Kahului). First, a quick lunch at Flatbread Pizza, then off to Ho'okipa Beach Park.

Ho'okipa Beach Park is is a small beach, about 1/2 mile long. Parking is sparse - we ended up parking at the west end in an area marked off for the lifeguards. It was the only place where there was easy access to the sand in a beach wheelchair. We asked the lifeguards if we could park there, and they said yes. Otherwise, i am not sure if we could have stayed.

At the west end, where we entered, there was a roped off area, where a couple of sea lions were napping. We talked to a couple of conservationists there about the sea lions and the sea turtles. The turtles - Hawaiian Green Turtles - are at the east end of the beach. Kathy & Hillary stayed put, but the rest of us walked down to see the turtles. They were also in a roped-off area. There had to be 2 dozen of them! The beach is their resting area.

For dinner the Lebrechts and Macalusio went to tanpopo, a Japanese restaurant in Kihei, for tempura and other great Japanese dishes. A wonderful, full day.
