The Hanzawa home in Wailuku -
breakfast time!

Their beautiful home sits high in the Wailuku hills, with incredble views of Maui

Looking toward Kihei and Wailea. Beyond that are the slopes of Haleakala

A panorama showing their sweeping view. You can see the entire saddle of Maui - Kihei on the right, Kahului on the left. And Haleakala in background. I could have sat here all day

Our next, and final exursion - whale watching. Gino, Sharon, Luka, Ric

Shoving off, cap'n!

I think I see one!
Not always that easy to see, but every once in awhile a spout of water would emerge (video)

Yeah, we bought the picture -
but it was a good one!
Once final stop - Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice, this time in Kihei.
So refreshing!

Our trip comes to an end
Days 6 & 7 - December 30-31
Wailuku, Whale Watching, and Kihei, Maui
to Yorba Linda, California
Another beautiful, sunny day!
We start the day at the Hanzawa's home in the hills of Wailuku for breakfast. What a view - from their balcony you can see both the north and south bays of Maui. And what a feast! Tropical fruit, eggs, bacon, sausage, and Howard's special recipe pancakes. When I get home, I won't have to eat for a week!
One final excursion for the Lebrechts and Macalusos: a whale watching boat. We catch the boat at the Maui Ocean Center in Maalaea, just west of Kihei. The tour is about 2 hours. You never know if you will see whales or not. We saw a bunch!! Mostly they were a good distance from the boat. In fact, the boat is required to stay at least 1/4 mile from them. At one point, the captain was surprised that one got so close, and so he shut the engines down. We got a close view! Never did any of the whales breach for us, but a fantastic show nonetheless.
After the tour, made a quick trip to Kihei for one last order of shave ice. From there, we stopped at a grocery store on the way back to the Hanzawa's to pick up sandwiches that we could eat at the airport terminal.
We spent a couple of hours at the Hanzawa's visiting, then headed off to the airport. So long, Hanzawas, and thank you for your wonderful hospitality! Our 10 pm flight took us overnight without incident or delay to Los Angeles Airport. From there we picked up our van and drove home.
It was a wonderful 6 days in Paradise, highlighted by Jordan & Heidi's wedding. So glad that Hillary could come with us, as she doesn't get to travel that often.
