Ozbrecht 2019 - Iceland & The Baltics
Gdańsk, Poland
August 22

Upon entering the Gdańsk harbor, we were met by the Westerplatte Monument, erected to commemorate a battle against Germany's 1939 invasion of Poland, marking the beginning of World War II

Polish countryside

Kościół Rzymskokatolicki Pw. Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa, a church in Stegna

The Stutthof Concentration Camp, in 1939 the first Nazi camp built outside German borders

The museum. The camp sits behind it

Guard towers

Thousands of shoes; so many would die here, murdered outright or from the extreme living conditions. This was a hard visit

Barracks

Some of the exhibits. The more vivid and disturbing exhibits are not shown

At the back of the camp, instruments of death

Memorial to 65,000 Jews, resistance fighters and prisoners of war from as many as 28 countries who died here
Humans reduced to numbers. It was not a visit we looked forward to, but oh so necessary

More of the Polish countryside on our return to Gdańsk

We will have a walking tour of the city - but first, a little beer and Polish cuisine

Na Zdrowie!

Gdańsk Marina, just across from Hotel Gdańsk, where we ate

Next day: it was our only full day at sea. It was nice to take a break!

Every meal on board was 5-star. We ate at one of the two reservation -only restaurants 4 times. This night we ate at The Chef's Table. Each night is a chef's pick meal - no menu choices. It was Mexican night: octopus appetizer, short ribs, mousse for dessert.
Delicious!
